RED LIES: Hoosiers Don’t Support Abortion Care

Republican lawmakers, when asked about their tireless, sometimes illogical pursuit of abortion restrictions, respond by saying they are just representing the will of the people. It’s what their constituents want.

They repeat this narrative ad nauseum because they are trying to make themselves believe along with the rest of us.

Indiana’s Congressional delegation is 82% Republican; 82% in favor of the recent SCOTUS ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and 82% in favor of Indiana’s near-total abortion ban. Do 82% of Hoosiers agree with them? Nope.

In polling in Indiana conducted this June where respondents were pretty equally distributed between Democrats and Republicans and across age groups, 64% of Hoosiers said they support abortion access.

Even more indicative of how Hoosiers feel on abortion is the desire by 78% to have abortion added to the ballot as an initiative.

64% support abortion access. 78% support putting abortion up for a statewide vote.

How are 82% of our legislators in D.C. and 73% of our lawmakers in Indianapolis working against the will of Hoosiers?

Even though Indiana does not have a mechanism for a citizen-led ballot initiative, the Indiana General Assembly is able to add an initiative to the ballot. 78% of their constituents want that. Why won’t they do it? Because they won’t win.

The next time you hear a Republican representative speaking nonsense about abortion legislation, remember that nonsense is all they have. It’s the only way they can continue to circumvent and ignore the will of the people.
